Emergent Situations in Total Laryngectomy: Considerations for Allied Health Providers

Healthcare for a patient post-total laryngectomy is a multidisciplinary effort of inpatient and outpatient intervention. As allied health professionals become part of the care-network for total laryngectomy patients, it is vital to provide information regarding the emergency management of this unique patient population, with speech-language pathologists (SLP) playing a crucial role in providing peer education. Situations such as stomal stenosis, mucus plugs, pulmonary considerations in total neck breathers, and tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (TEP) dislodgment will be discussed. This live, one-hour webinar will explore the basics of total laryngectomy, troubleshooting/management of common complications, and the importance of a multidisciplinary team.

Past Professional Education Offerings:

Tracheoesophageal Puncture in 2024: Who, When, and How?

Tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) has long been considered the gold standard communication option after total laryngectomy surgery. Practice patterns have shifted back and forth over the years with regards to who undergoes TEP, when in the continuum of care a TEP takes place, and even the surgical approaches themselves. While speech-language pathologists are not surgeons, they are arguably one of the most vital and long-term members of the care team for patients undergoing a total laryngectomy, especially with regards to TEP. This live, one-hour webinar will explore the who, when, and how of tracheoesophageal puncture and the role of the SLP in total laryngectomy/TEP patient care.

From Post-Op to Late Adopt: Initiating HME Use

We know that heat and moisture exchangers (HMEs) provide evidence-based benefits to our total laryngectomy patients and their overall health. But where do we start? Taking that evidence to practice isn’t always straightforward or realistic. How do we actually introduce HMEs post-operatively? And what about those patients who are late to HME adoption? This one-hour, live webinar will focus on functional tips for starting HME use with patients wherever they are in their survivorship journey, whether that’s immediately following their total laryngectomy, or several years later.

Maximizing Functional Communication with Tracheoesophageal Speakers

Tracheoesophageal (TE) speech is often considered the best and most functional voice following a total laryngectomy. But as a medical provider, how do we define or quantify that? In this professional webinar, we will discuss functional communication, voice considerations, and tools, and options to simplify and optimize daily communication of TE speakers. Topics will include heat moisture exchange (HME) use, biofeedback tools, and strategies to improve hands free voicing.

Early Intervention in Total Laryngectomy Care: Pre-and Post-Operative Considerations

Total laryngectomy is a life-altering surgery that impacts some of our most basic functions: breathing, communicating and swallowing. Speech-language pathologists play an integral role in the care of patients who undergo total laryngectomy. This care ideally begins before surgery, then continues to the post-operative phase and many times for the rest of the patient’s life. In this webinar, we will discuss the role of the SLP in the earliest phases—pre- and post-operative care—and review the evidence that supports our goals.

Updates in HME: Evidence, Ethics, and Expectation

Heat Moisture Exchangers (HMEs) have been widely accepted into practice and are now standard of care in pulmonary rehabilitation for the patient with a total laryngectomy. But the landscape of HMEs is changing, so what does the science say about that? We know that sizing matters for a voice prosthesis, but does it matter for an HME? Who are all these changes to HMEs serving? It may not be who you think. Join us for this live, one-hour webinar as we let science and HME research be our guide.

Navigating the Peaks and Valleys of Peristomal Assessment for HME Attachments

February 9-10, 2021

Benefits of an HME (Heat Moisture Exchange) system use are well documented; however, achieving success can be an uphill climb. To avoid baseplate attachment trial and error, reduce waste, and achieve optimal HME use, systematic evaluation of the peristomal area is a necessary skilled service that ultimately fosters patient success. This 1-hour live webinar will use lecture and case example discussions to address the evaluation of peristomal features that may impact HME attachments and strategies for when situations get a little…sticky.

This webinar will discuss products primarily manufactured by InHealth Technologies®
